Inner peace is the ability to return to a peaceful state of mind no matter what happens around us. It is a skill that one can develop each day and not something that one can acquire by performing rituals and exercises. When we have peace, our body and mind feel fluid, intense and our muscles begin to relax. A person with inner peace seems to be able to overcome any kind of adversity with enthusiasm.
Inner peace means that you have a sense of harmony, emotional well-being, and satisfaction in your life instead of your current problems. You can achieve this by making yourself acceptable to the world around you, engaging in thoughtfulness, and meditation.
At the heart of finding inner peace is finding clarity on the difference between knowing and understanding. Mentally we ‘know’ that being in a state of peace is good for us. But we need to develop a deeper understanding of the need to live in a peaceful state of mind and why being in any other state of mind is unhealthy both physically and mentally.
Knowing what inner peace means is very different from having it. Surprisingly, most people are aware of this concept and may even use it to teach it but nothing in their lives depicts this.
You may have seen people who always seemed happy and healthy no matter what happened and you just kept wondering if they lived on the same planet as you. They may have mastered the art of finding and keeping their inner peace. You have heard that right: they have mastered the art of finding and keeping the peace.
Finding inner peace is not enough. It is important to keep it.
Inner peace is important for the following reasons:
1. You begin to see and appreciate all the little things you never thought important such as being able to walk, eat, breathe, have a roof over your head, and even the sun that never fails to rises.
2. It teaches you to be patient because, at the end of the day, we will all be on the same day. No one has ever hurried into the next day.
3. You learn to live, enjoy, and utilize every single moment of your life as you know that we would all leave this world one day.
4. It teaches you to take things one step at a time. We all say that phrase especially when we find ourselves in a predicament but never fully realize it until we find inner peace.
5. Your relationship and friendship take a positive turn because you have learned to appreciate and live every moment you have with your loved ones.
How can you find inner peace?
Like many other concepts, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to finding inner peace. However, the points mentioned below might prove effective in your journey of finding peace.
1. Declutter Your Mind
When the mind is occupied with thoughts of “what if” and “how not” and work issues and family matters, there is no way you have had enough space in your mind to think otherwise.
This would take a lot of patience, practice, and exercise because you can’t just tell your mind, “Hey, stop overthinking”. You have to consciously remind yourself to not overthink things and only take what you can handle.
2. Take Responsibility for Your Actions
It takes all the maturity to take responsibility for your actions, especially if it is something you are not proud of but to find your inner peace, you have to accept your mistakes and everything.
3. Accept the fact that you are human
Alongside taking responsibility for your actions, realize that you cannot control everything. You are a human and there is only so much you can do about anything.
When you finally accept this, you will stop regretting things and stop blaming yourself for the stuff you did not cause and could not prevent.
4. Set Boundaries For Yourself
We all like to be free and do whatever we dream of, so boundaries can sometimes look like our enemies but they are not. Instead, boundaries help us to stay focused and manageable. So, the sooner you start setting boundaries, the better.
Some of the boundaries you should set include time for social media, talk time, TV time, and work time.
5. Take a break
If you are struggling to take a break, then you are the one who needs it the most. Even phones and laptops start to heat up and lag when they are used for long periods of time.
It’s okay to put your life on hold. Go on vacation. Go the world. Visit the park.
